Telecom Cambodia Slated For Privatization
- Article was published by Telecomweb titled Telecom Cambodia Slated for Privatization, by this time I quote the whole text and repost on my Web below:
- <Telecom Cambodia, with plans to privatize the company by 2008, according to reports trickling out of the country.
- Privatization is not as big a deal in Cambodia as it is most other countries with government-owned phone systems. The Phnom Penh network is the only one owned and run by the country’s Ministry of Posts and Telecommunication – the country was one of the first in the region to liberalize telecom and to allow private ownership as part of its recovery from years of civil war, during which almost all of the country’s communications infrastructure was destroyed. These days, there are six operators with a total of eight fixed and mobile networks in operation – all privately owned except for the Phnom Penh network.
- Telecom Cambodia will start life with 700 employees who had worked for the Ministry of Posts along with $40.3 million in assets. Although still technically owned by the government, the plan has it being operated as if it already were a private company.
- There was no indication of how Cambodia will go about the privatization process, whether by public stock sale of perhaps by selling the outfit to the highest bidder in the type of auction several other countries have used to privatize their phone networks.>>
- During my trip in India for 4 days, I found out that wireless desk phone have b
een used in all most of the rural areas in Podicherry, located in South India. According to my interview with Indian vendor, who was selling petty products and goods in the small store, he said that there were at least from 200 to 300 users to come to make wireless phone call at his store per day.
