Life of Promotion Girl
Tuesday, May 30, 2006 11:40After Cambodia have full peace from more than 20-year civil war, Cambodia economy have been transfered from closed market to free market. There are large amount of local and international investments entering in Cambodia. Various kind of products have been imported from foreign countries.
For me, I don’t know where or when the term “Promotion Girl” originated from. The Promotion Girl is the pretty girl or woman who is employed to promote goods and new services for private company such as beer, cigarette, perfune and cosmetics and so on. Most of beer promotion girls always work at the evening until night. Because restaurants, bars regularly open in the evening. Their income is depent on their monthly salary and commision. When they sell a lot of products, they will get more further income from commision. If you want to see the activity of beer promotion girls, you should go and have drinks with your friends at restaurant. They will be standing around you and ask you that “Bong” need to drink my beer. At that time, we will hear different sound of them to ask you. For me, It is hard to make dicission instantly, at the time they ask me. I always let my friends to dicide. But my good method is that I told them that I need pure water and soft drinks and then they would go away from table.
Beer companies are being urged to double the wages they pay Cambodian promotional women in an effort to curb a reliance on prostitution and rising a HIV rate.
The life of them is not easy to sell beers at night, they have been always threathened by the drunk or guests, including touching her butt, kissing, and so on. The unethnical acts are damanging their reputation and value of Khmer culture.
The incident happened at the earlier this year, a 23-year-old woman was shot in the foot by off-duty Cambodian army officers because she was slow in bringing ice for their drinks.

I see ‘promotion girls’ wearing black, selling cigarettes and think, ‘Angel of Death’!
There’s been some discussion previously about raising the salary of the beer girls. I wonder where the research of this new effort is from.

Between banning 3G sytems and raising quality of lives of those girls, which one is better? I wonder how they have an idea to forbid 3G phone while they fail to consider this problem.

According The Cambodia Daily’s news on 30 May 2006, Retired King Norodom Sihanouk has added his voice to growing international calls for better and safer working conditions for Cambodia’s beer promotion workers, three of whom have been shot by their customers in recent months.
In a letter posted to his Website on Tuesday, Norodom Sihanouk expressed pity for female beer promoters, but said he was powerless to help them as he has vowed to forsake politics.
“Foreign companies which export their famous beer to the 2nd Kingdom of Cambodia earn millions of US dolars every years… thanks to the desirable “Khmer beer girls,” The retired King wrote.
“These poor beer girls are my [great-grandchildren],”. he continued.
“I cannot save them. having promised not to involve myself anylonger in politics, including that of beer.”
