Reaction to watching World Cup 2006

The football World Cup 2006 will work off today, June, 09 2006, in Germany. The football matching will take one month from 9 June to 9 July 2006. In 2002, World Cup was hosted by Japan and Korea.

In Cambodia, there will be broadcasting live of World Cup 2006. Meanwhile, there are different reactions to Buddhist monks watching football match because they think that it is against the Buddhist faith and monks are required to challenge discipline and to learn if they watch sports. Another opinion raised that monks can watch football World Cup but not allowed to scream, cheer with a angry face or happy feeling and bet money on football match.

The Cambodia Daily reported on Friday, June 9 2006 that.

Supreme Patriach Non Nget, chief of monks in Phnom Penh, said on Wednesday that monks can watch the televised tournament but they must do so silently

Sao Chantol, chief monk at Wat Lanka, said that simply watching the World Cup goes against the Buddhist faith, as if it is an event that involves gambling, even if the monks are not directly involved. He added that watching sport challenges the discipline, monks are required to learn.

Sun Kim Hun, secretary of state for the Ministry of Cults and Religion, agreed that monks should not watch the World Cup, as they would be unable to control their emotions.

Chea Vannath, former president of the Center for Social Development, said that following the ” middle path” requires some ” in-the-field training,” and that allowing monks to watch World Cup games would be a good learning experience.

For my opinion, I think that it is too late and not appropriate because almost of monks have watched sports on local and cable television such as football, Khmer kickboxing and so on. That is what I eyed. I always visited monks in pagoda in Phnom Penh. What will affect the watching of the football match??. Are there law or regulation to ban monks to watch sports?. By the way, it is not too bad to effect them. If they bet money on game match, they should be punished by pagoda committee or ministry.

hi brother,

What is the point to watch soccer without screaming? If the monks want to watch the matches, it means that they like sports.  They are also humans! If the monk is not allowed to laugh, to be happy or to be excited for the entire life, I think the word “monk” will be extinct.

Your weird World Cup note of the day:

We hesitate to call football a religion. Clearly, our instincts are correct.

It’s way more than that.

So thinks the chief of Cambodia’s Buddhist monks, anyway. His charges aren’t allowed to watch TV, movies or artistic displays, but he lifted the ban for the World Cup.

“The monks can watch the games on TV, but they may not bet on the games,” Supreme Patriarch Nom Ngeth said. “So far, I have received some complaints that some monks are betting during this World Cup tournament.”

Yes. Monks. Betting.

So the monks are allowed to watch, but they can’t cheer or get excited.

Which should be fine as long as they’re fans of Team USA.

CAMBODIAN GAMBLING PLEA: Cambodia’s prime minister urged soccer fans in the impoverished Southeast Asian country to stop betting their money and belongings on World Cup matches.

“If you are betting on soccer matches, just bet verbally,” Hun Sen said Thursday. “Just watch it, but don’t sell your cows, motorcycles, cars, houses or land for bets on soccer.”

Cambodia has only one official soccer betting company, which has been doing a brisk trade since the World Cup kicked off in Germany last week.

The chief of Cambodia’s Buddhist monks, Supreme Patriarch Non Ngeth, announced over the weekend that the country’s holy men would be granted an exception to watch soccer matches during the tournament — but he said they would not be permitted to cheer or gamble.

Monks in Cambodia are not supposed to watch television, according to Buddhism’s strictest tenets that say the holy men must abstain from pleasurable activity.
