The strike schelduled for July 3 by teachers and labor unions will not be given permission. The protest aims at demanding to raise teachers and workers’ salaries because they can not live on such a small amount of salary. By the way, government will have no position to raise salaries yet.
Om Yentieng, advisor to Prime Minister, joked that both he and Hun Sen want to raise teachers’ salaries to $200,000 per month, but he added that the government can only make small increases each year. What he said about raising the high salary is what is unbelievable. It meant that government have no its reall willings to improve teachers’ living standard. If their livelihood is still poor, how will they be able to improve their education?. In order to live, they find out many ways to earn money for their lives and families.
Rong Chhun, President of the Cambodian Independent Teachers’ Association, said that he wants teachers’ salaries raised from an average of $25 to $100 per month. And he accused of the government of choosing not to raise civil servants’ incomes because it is easier to buy the votes of poor people (The Cambodia Daily reported).

I’ve just found your blog and it really caught my interest. For me and my partner everything about Cambodia interests us. I am American and my partner is Vietnamese born, we both live in Sydney, AUS . We were in Cambodia in 2003 and the sights and sounds stay with us to this day. We always discuss how if we won the lottery we would sell our home here and take the money and try somehow to open a Free school in Phnom Penh, Battambang or Kampong cham paying the teachers a good salary in exchange for commitment and hard work. Cambodians have so much to offer the world in culture, history, art and most of all how to treat fellow humans. All they need is the support and backing to get their education system in working order. For us just receiving smiles and seeing the joy in peoples faces would suffice in return. With the right tools and commitment Cambodia could surpass its own expectations and be the next Asian tiger.
