Youth worry about Military draft Law

More than 20 year-civil war completely ended after Khmer stopped killing each others. At the present, what the current government needs is to develop country, improve people’s living standards, and create job opportunities and so on. We, Cambodian citizens, really do not need fighting anymore. Why does government make Conscription Draft Law?

Following government drafted Conscription Law, Cambodian youth expressed their concerns about it because there will be corruption, lack of transparency and injustice for the youth when the law is passed. The victims will be the poor family, while the rich and powerful family will avoid from the law.

On Friday August 11, the ministry of defense defended its new military draft law before the National Assembly’s defense commission and vowed to demobilize 7,000 ghost soldiers in order to pay for the conscription of thousands of young draftees. The law is required people aged 18 to 35 to be eligible for military for 18 months.

Soth Nimol, staff of the Khmer Youth Association, said that youth will lose their studies and their jobs. He added that the government should spend its budget on education, health and creating jobs rather than increasing an already boated military.

Yim Sovann, Commission Chairman and Sam Rainsy party lawmaker, said that:

“I think that young people who have education, skills and human rights knowledge can bring ideas to help clear the soldier’s minds related to the respect for human rights.”

Student of Law and Economic University voiced his concerns over the approved draft law. He added that “the passed law is good but there will be insufficient points to force us”. These points will be able to force us because of lack of knowledge, education and health.
