Miss Cambodia 2006 Contest cancelled

The government made decision to bar company from holding Miss Cambodia 2006 because the company failed to demonstrate the necessary funding and technical ability.

The Ministry of Culture and Planet Communication Company were scheduled to hold the Miss Cambodian 2006 beauty pageant ranged the age of 18 to 24 and completed at least high school, which company will host the contest. By the way, company planned to send Winner to participate in the 2007 Miss Universe contest. The government planned to pay half of the budget for the contest. More than a decade, Cambodia failed to hold Miss Contest.

According to The foreign news, Kem Kola, company’s marketing Manager, said Thursday that the media was responsible for the decision. “The ministry was not happy that the media disseminated information about the contest”. He added that “I am very sad that the world will not know Cambodia and its culture”.

Ministry official said on condition of anonymity that contest was cancelled because there were not good relationship between ministry and company. Official added that it was so far way for selection of Miss Contest. By the way, it is a big problem; it is not like selection of Freshy Boy and Freshy Girl.

The same source was cited that Meng Rita, acting-general director of Sam Rainsy Party, applauded the decision, saying government funds could be better used to solve Cambodia’s economic and social problems. “It is not necessary in these circumstances when we are facing flooding.” He added that such contest only help rich and powerful men and women find new girlfriends and boyfriends.

The postponement of Miss Contest is opposite to Norton University’s Tourism and Hotel management sector student’s idea. He saw many advantages getting from Miss Contest Selection to participate in Universal Contest such as the possibility of Khmer women to reveal their beauty, culture, civilization to the world in order to attract foreign tourists to visit Cambodia.

Muo Sokhour, former of minister of women’s affairs and Sam Rainsy party’s member, said that sending the Khmer Miss to participate in Universal Contest is not priority point. The ministry should improve Cambodian culture and society, whose morality is decreasing.
