In modern age, people love using luxury materials such luxury cars, hi-tech device and sexy clothing imported from foreign countries. At the same time, the Dating Agency has been designed to help men and women find partners. In order to find suitable couple or partners, they have to sign up for dating agency by providing their background such as occupation, age, interest, a full-length photo and then describing the kind of man or woman they are interested in.

Seng Leakhana, General Manager, launched a Couple Service since January 2006 in an attempt to assist women and men to find partners. Each client has to pay her the $20 fee that encourages them to enroll at Couple Service. So far, the agency has help six couples get together and two to marry among registered 80 members, including garment factory workers, teachers, NGO staff, civil servant, and RCAF officer, several Westerners and a television host.

After the operation of the dating service, different opinions raised the effect of this service to Khmer culture. By the way, couple service office may be forced to close if it’s unable to register a license from ministry.

Prince Sisowath Kola Chat, the culture ministry’s secretary of State, warned that allowing Cambodian women to choose their partners could head to social anarchy. He added that “I don’t agree with this evolution. It is too fast. Wait 50 years more.” Women are having freedom to choose leads to the loss of Khmer identity.”

Mu Sochua, former minister of women’s affair, also expressed concern, although she said women should have choices about who they marry. She warned that women could be tricked into sex trade or meet unstable men who are prone to violence.

Dating Agency’s manager said that “It’s not good when a man loves a woman and they run away from home because the old people disagree.”

According to Chan Tyta’s moment released on the Cambodia Daily, he said that “It is not bad for children to choose their own partners. In some cases, parents arrange partners for their children but do not care whether they love each other.”

So why don’t they find a democratic resolution by asking girls? I will vote for ” agree to have dating agency”.

Online dating is big over here in Canada. The people that use this service say that it helps them find the one person that they have much in common with. But I do have to disagree with the Secretary of State, that allowing women the freedom to choose “leads to the loss of Khmer identity.” If men are given the choice of whom they wish to marry, I don’t see why woman cannot have that freedom of choice as well. Whether they do it now or wait 50 year does not make any difference.
