Black Box Campaign blocked by Police

Black BoxOn August 04, 2006 at around 9 am, pickup truck carrying black box were stopped by approximately 50 police and military police near the headquarter of CCHR in Tuol Kok district in Phnom Penh, which mad black box campaign unsuccessful. This campaign is aimed at soliciting comments from common people on corruption. The municipal officials said that the event will be able to affect the traffic congestion and social order.

The Black Box Initiative (BBI) is an anti-corruption campaign created by the Cambodian Center for Human Rights (CCHR). CCHR starts this campaign because corruption is a violation of people’s integrity and trust as it consistently undermines the rule of law that is in place to protect human rights.

On the other hand, there are the same campaigns in some provinces happening without being curbed by local authorities, except Battambang province.

Phnom Penh municipality governor was quoted by the Cambodia Daily as saying that “We have allowed 99% of Kem Sokha’s activities but I begged him to stop this one because it will affect public order in the city”.

While the Cambodian Human Right Action Committee released its statement, it said that “such action restricts the freedom of expression guaranteed by Constitution of the Kingdom of Cambodia and is contrary to international convention.”

It aint surprising to see that the Cambodian authority did their utmost to discontinue this campaign. The current Khmer administration is corrupt to the bone, from the top down. They would not hide their evil nature, and would do anything to advance their interests. This corrupt practise has been in place since the time the Hun Sen government was in place. No one in the Cambodian government uniform is ever good. People tend to avoid authorities if they could, because the bad guys are usually the ones in uniform. Strange? It is not strange. Remeber that Hun Sen said that “anything can happen in Cambodia.” Yes it aint strange. Short live Hun Sen and his dog followers!!!!
