TV on 3G Phone

On the last Friday, MobiTel, which is the leading mobile telephone networ, have launched the country’s first 3G mobile phone network that will be able to watch real-time broadcasts of television and have to access a fast Internet Connection.

The Cambodia Daily cited MobiTel General Manager David Springgs as saying that five channels are currently on offer with the 3G service: CTN, CTN International, Bayon TV, ESPN sports network and CNBC financial news. He added that later this year, MobiTel plans to offer a sixth “lifestyle”channel mixing content from diverse source like Reuters news services and Fashion TV.

On 19 May 2006, senior government officials’ wives sent petition to Prime minister Hun Sen to ban the use of the lastest generation of mobile phones-3G- because it will be able to destroy Khmer culture and pollute the minds of teenagers.

Mao Charkya, a technical officer at Telecom Cambodia which is the government joint venture land-line company, said that television has been permitted on the MobiTel service because pornography from television broadcasts (The Daily report).

According The Daily’r report, Springgs said that “we have to look at the technology and see if the video phone feature could be disabled and we have to change our marketing… now we are the only service offering 3G in Cambodia”. Adding that “If and when video phones become acceptable again, the feature can be enabled.”
