The increasing number of road traffic accidents in 2006

In Cambodia, road traffic accident is the second killer to kill people after HIV/Aid infection. While, people killed by unexploded orphan and mine are ranked 3. The cause of accidents is because of careless and drunken drivers.

According to report of Handicap International, Ministry of Health, Interior and Transport, the average of 4 Cambodian people killed in road traffic accident every day in the first four month of 2006. This figure is higher than figure of 2005- average of 3 fatalities every day.

Jean Van Wetter, director of operation for the Handicap International said that “Road safety result from a combination of factors: awareness, road signs, engineering, emergency assistance. But it’s shown in every country that the most important thing for controlling accidents is law enforcement.” The Cambodia Daily reported.

The Draft of the new traffic law has been approved by the council of ministries and will be sent to National Assembly. By the way, the new traffic law stated that those who break traffic law will be fined and jailed in prison up to five years for drivers who cause fatal accident. I am not sure that the new law will offer justice to victims and victim’s family or not because the family’s victims or victims were given injustice from the people who caused wounded and injured on the road.

By the way, this is the first unprecedented event that Buddhist Monks gathered in Hun Sen Park on Sunday in order to commemorate the hundreds of people who killed and maimed on the nation’s roads this year. The number of 166 fatal and 607 injured people is in the first 10 months of 2006.

Moreover, the City Hall widens Russian Federation Boulevard by three meters on each side in an attempt to reduce traffic jam from University of Phnom Penh to Choam Chao worth $2.07 million.

It is remarkable that, the accidents in Cambodian become the scared and concerned killer every minute. Other aspect is that victims were given immorality and injustice by drunken and careless drivers. And then they escaped, later they just paid the victim’s family and victims in compensation.
