Presence of Former US president’s visit to Cambodia
On December 04 2006, the former US president’s visit to Cambodia was the first historical event for Cambodia and the positive sign to reveal all Cambodia’s young to avoid and prevent the epidemic of HIV/ADIS. By the way, his presence in Cambodia has given tremendous psychological value to prevent spread of disease and discrimination against those with HIV/ADS infection.
Bill Clinton arrived in Phnom Penh by his own jet without an official welcome by high-level government officials at the airport due to the request of US official, and met with Cambodia Prime Minister to sign a memorandum of understanding to provide for the medical needs of 3,000 HIV-positive children in Cambodia over the next year.
During his visit, he went to visit Wat Phnom, the National Museum and met with the HIV-positive orphans being cared for by the Catholic Maryknoll community and the NGO New Hope for Cambodian Children in the Phnom Penh Capital. The next day, he flied by his private jet to visit Cambodia’s world-famous Angkor Wat archaeological site, and Angkor Hospital for Children in Siem Reap Town.
The main mode of HIV transmission in Cambodia is sexual intercourse between men and women. Poverty, migration for work, often on a seasonal basis, low-socio-economic status of women and high incidence of gender-based violence are all factors facilitating the spread of HIV/AIDS.
