2007 Chinese New Year was celebrated amongst Khmer-Chinese people throughout Cambodia. Some businesses, owned by Chinese or Khmer-Chinese shut down for a few days. Students stayed away from school, It was expressed concerns that students could become accustomed to having days off for Chinese New Year. Most people flocked to provinces to visit their families, relatives and go to beaches as well. In really, Chinese New Year was not Cambodian national holiday. Before, during and after the celebration of Chinese New Year in Cambodia, there were incidents happening both positive and negative signs. It was noted that:
- Belief: According to Chinese tradition, the year of Golden Pig is the auspicious and it only occurs every 60 years and it will come again 2067. Believers said that “People born this year are supposed to be gentle, honest, kind and hard-working.” In addition, if babies born during the Year of Golden Pig are believed to increase wealth and help businesses grow. Canadia Bank Chairman plans to award $1,000 to any of his 1,800 employees who bear a child during the new Chinese calendar year.
- Blaze: The day of celebration of Chinese New Year, there were two blazes sparking by incense burned. More than 60 fruit stalls of Neak Meas market at Tuol Kok district in Phnom Penh at noon on February 14. Other blaze burned down 12 wooden homes in Siem Reap province after stove exploded.
- Price of Goods: Before celebrating Chinese New Year, price of fruits, food, goods doubled. Even though, residents still bought it for celebrating New Year.
- Accidents: During 3 days of Chinese New Year, there were many cases of accidents happening.
- Guesthouse and Hotel: Price of guesthouse and hotels room increase double. By the way, guesthouse and hotel rooms were filled with guests. Given the Chinese holiday, guests know to book in advance of arrival.
