Nita: Beer Promotion Girl
Nita, 19, is the beer promotion girl at Happy Happy restaurant in Phnom Penh where she always sells her beer every night. She works from 6:00 PM to 11:30 PM every day and she is transported by her company’s mini-bus. She is dropped at restaurant and then transported to home. She said that she sells Blue Ice beer during 6 months here. Before she sold other beer, but she made a small amount of income. So, she changed from selling Anchor beer to Blue Ice beer.
In normally, all staffs get paid from company but she does not get basic salary like other staff working for other companies. Money that she receives every month depends on amount of bottles sold. She sold 12 bottles of beer, she was given $10. It means that she gains commission from sold beers. If she sells more, she makes more money. At least 6 bottles she sold a day.
When guests arrive at restaurant, there are many beer girls standing around guests and asking them to drink their beer. Sometimes, guests were hard to make decision to choose the kind of beer. That is life of beer girl. If they do not like that they will not be able to sell their beer. If they can not sell their beer, they will not earn money.
Nowadays, Nita rents a small room for living with her mother off Beoung Kak Lake. All income she has to spend on house rental and basic living cost every day. In addition, she has to feed her mother as well.
She said that she used to be drunk almost every day because she has to drink beer with her male guests. Sometimes, she has many guests who sit in different table. She has to sit with all guests, so she does not sit one place. She has to move from table to table in order to serve her guests who order her beer. If she does not give good service to her guests, she will be complained from her guests and boss.
