Last month, I went to Kampong Cham province to join my co-worker’s wedding, traveling with my former university teacher. She said that there are some kinds of beggars in our society. Some beggars who beg money for supporting their lives and families but others for becoming the rich. She said that there are four kinds of beggars:
- Street beggars: those who are poor are begging money in public place such as market, tourist site, restaurants; from home to home…etc. the amount of begging is small amount to support their daily lives and families. Those are the disabled, the elders, the poor young, orphan and so on. They made small amount so they cannot become the rich.
- Traffic Police: that is kind of traffic police who stand at traffic lights in city and town and they always take money from taxi drivers, which loaded passengers, and goods. Almost trucks, bus or taxi arrive at the police station. The drivers seem to have obligation to pay a small amount to police. The money that they received cannot make their lives and family better and rich. It only helps support their family plus government salary.
- Customs officials at border check point: The incomes they receive are from illegal or legal smugglers and make them rich, not like street beggars and police.
- Government officials at office: in order to precede your documents or something running fast, you have to put money under the table. By the way, the money they receive makes their family and lives better and rich not like street beggars or traffic police.
