Concerned about football betting

Currently, young boys and adults have been becoming the victims of football betting such as the loss of job opportunities, school dropout, theft, and so on. Phnom Penh residents, who are parents, guardians, brothers and sisters, expressed their extreme concerns about the future of youths and children, who dropped out of school due to drug addiction and football betting across Phnom Penh and other provinces.

Last month, the ministry of finance extended monopoly re-license to football betting juggernaut CamboSix for next four years in Cambodia. CamboSix is the gaming giant which opened as Royal Cambodia Goals Co. Ltd by the CamboSix Investment Group in 2002. So far, there are 21 betting shops in Phnom Penh and one in Sihanoukville.

By the way, many illegal football betting tables have also been placed across capital. Football gamblers can place bets over the phone, Internet and betting shops within Cambodia.

Parents are getting concerns about their sons’ future because they are addicted to football betting every day and their sons always watch live football match broadcasting on local TV channel and cable TV. Losers always sell their belongings, become theft unintentionally and steal their parents’ valuable stones. Chaos in society will break out because of victim of sport betting.

Last month, former financial staff working for hotel in Phnom Penh, embezzling $300,000 from hotel for betting football was arrested.

Meanwhile, the boom in football betting has civil society leaders and the opposition repeating longstanding concerns about CamboSix’s relationship with ruling party, its perceived lack of adequate taxation, and gambling’s negative impact on society. The government has to reconsider impact of football betting’s income and the young children’s future and society.
