Is it my fault to use word “Blog”?

It is first time for me to be criticized from our Cambodian people when I used verbally the word “Blog” during talking show on air. I was invited to be speaker on air at studio last few months in order to make discussion over ICT to enhance democracy in Cambodia. While I introduced to all radio listeners about my organization’s current programs and training program are amongst others. During that time, I announced listeners to come to attend blog training course at my organization.

Then, one of listeners called in and he said that one of speakers said the new word that made people confused. He added that speakers should not utilize unused-ever-word, and should use Khmer word instead. In reality, Blog is new term for me that I just knew it more than one year. I cannot translate it into Khmer (like computer, USB, CPU, LCD and so on). So far, we cannot translate all technology term into Khmer language.

I think that it maybe my fault that I used word that most of Cambodian people never knew it before. I should say the simple word for listeners to easily understand and listen. And then I explained to him that Blog was like personal website. I was not upset for what he blamed me about this.

It is because of new technology just coming into our Countries. And most of our people are not well-educated. Even me, I cannot keep up with new technology. Most of young students are easier to understand than the elderly.

When I met my friends and I wanted them to know how to create blog in order to share something with friends and others. But most of them did not know what blog is. They said they never heard this word before. So, sometimes it is hard for me to say word “blog” to them.

I think you’re still right.

It’s not any other’s fault. But it is because of the education, new technology and accepting what is new.

I think “Blog” was strange for him. But he must have learnt or tried something new. Because everything doesn’t stay [still] in one place when we talk about IT. Trying and learning something new is good for him and us.

You use the word “Blog” is right, because you have the idea to share the people what is going on with field of IT or website. Sooner or later they will know, learn and thank you. Cos “Blog” is world-widely used. Not only you and me.

Please continue your good work.
Cheers,

Makara Kao

You are doing well Vutha. The problem in our language [Khmer] is certain word is never have or non-existed and we have to borrow from foreign language, and by the way we all learning as learning process is never ending it’ doesn’t matter how old are we or how young are we.

It is not your fault vutha to use such word, infact it is his fault that he failed to keep up on what’s going on out there.

And it is our job that blogger tell reader of what’s going on out there.

For me I don’t care if the word is english or french, as long as it is easier to understand I will use it

Some technical words need not to be translated but to understand what it is implied to be. Sometimes, we cannot understand it in Khmer but we do in English. So we use it. Everyone uses and understand what so what about him. Sometimes, we need to be khmerism but in some exact time, we shouldn’t. Let him be. You are doing ur best!!

Thanks for every ones to support my using word “blog” not to be wrong to Cambodians. I really know that it is very hard for them to hear word “blog”. I hope they will understand it well in near future. Nowadays, I want our people who have long working experiences and high education to have their own blog in order to share their knowledge with our next young generation.

Why do our people not like to write?

To answer to your question “Y don’t our ppl like to write?” i would like to raise some responses. the first one is that the habit of our peopel maybe they are lazy to write. as we can see a nice example, we don’t have a very clear history. sometimes i see the question mark after the year or the name in khmer history books. and one more point we learn our history by translating from other languages like chines or franch. the second point, it is hard for them to write in english be english is one of the main factor that prevents the growth of sharing idea in khmer society. Not so may khmer ppl can read or write khmer. the illiteracy rete in cambodia is still high. so we should encourage ppl to use khmer in discussion. and the last point is that khmer ppl don’t like to share. they just want themself to be the best of all. for instance, if one knows how to fix radio s/he may not share with other because s/he thinks that other will steal his/her job. to conclude these are the points that every khmer individual need to change. i have one philosophy and 1 to share that is “you change your country changes”

It is because of laziness of writing, So they did not share what they knew with the next generation. I so want our people like to write something that are their working experiences and knowledge for our young people.

To look at the foreigners, they like writing.

So that, the experienced person should start writing for our people. it is not late for them to do it.
