After Cambodian government submitted proposal to the United Nation Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) during 31st session in Christchurch that Preah Vihear temple, a centuries-old Angkorian complex a top a cliff adjacent to the Thai border, be listed as a World Heritage Site. Thai official expressed concerned over Cambodia’s lobbying of Unesco without Thailand’s participation.
Mr Adul Wichiencharoen, chairman of the National Committee on the Convention for the Protection of World Culture and Natural Heritage said consideration should be given to the whole site, not just the part of it on Cambodian soil.
According to Thai embassy senior official to Phnom Penh, he said that what Thai official said was personal point of view, not the stance of Thai government.
Preah Vihear temple was handed over by France to Thailand in 1954 and given back to Cambodia by the sentence of the La Er International Court dated 15 June 1962.
By the way, Cambodian government officials hoped that Preah Vihear temple would be listed as World Heritage following the world heritage affair official visited this temple on November 2006.
