Who is the first Khmer Blogger?
Thursday, August 16, 2007 14:14After Bloggers are booming in Cambodia during the last a few years, no one knows that who is the real first Khmer Blogger. Even me; I always asked myself who is the first one. By the way, I have sometimes asked other Cambodian bloggers about it but no one knows real answer to my question.
Recently, The Phnom Penh Post published its headline “Cloggers, the King Father and online dissentâ€. At that time, I knew that the retired King Norodom Sihanouk is the first Khmer blogger. The King started posting regularly on his website since 2002.
The Post reported that “The retired King was enjoying a global revolution in online self-publishing that has been likened to the invention of the printing press. Armed with easy-to-use software, always-on connections and increasingly powerful mobile devices, bloggers, the theory goes, have become active media players- enabling dissent, enhancing freedom of expression and broadcasting democracy.â€
In the interview by Bath Kanter, she posted article saying that “Meet Tharum: Cambodia’s Second Most Famous Bloggerâ€. She added that Tharum became a celebrity blogger when his blog was feature on the front page of The Cambodia Daily.
Lux coined the term “Clogging†(as known Cambodian Blogging). He became interested in blogging and is a pioneer of “Clogging” . At the present, he formed a team, named “Personal Information Technology Workshop†with five Cambodian bloggers: Khmerak, Deedeedoll, Kalyan Keo, and Trajoke.
At the same time, Open Forum of Cambodia is providing Blog Training to students, NGOs staffs, journalists, and other youths about how to create blog, how to write articles and how to use Khmer for blogging.

That is great, you were interviewed by AP. U will be popular blogger. Right? For me, yesterday, VOA interviewed me about Cambodian Blogger Summit. But I did not say more about it and i referred it to Virak. I told her about Cambodian bloggers and its advantages emerging among youths in Cambodia.
I have no specified figures of Cambodian bloggers. I used to talk with my friend who is the owner of http://feed.e-khmer.net told me that there are more than 300 Cambodian bloggers. I agreed with your estimated 1000 bloggers who are inactive. I think the not so much active Cambodian bloggers.
According to the Phnom Penh post report, it quoted figure from Global Voices Online as saying no more than 30 blogs produced by Cambodians, not counting expatriates and Cambodian living in abroad.
If you know more details about this, let me know.

[...] August 16th, 2007 Vutha wonders just who, exactly, is Cambodia’s first blogger. Nearly everybody agrees that, at least technically, it’s this guy. And, at least technically, that’s probably right. But the man who really inspired what is now the Kingdom’s legion of cloggers, it should be noted, is this fine fellow. I agree that his majesty the king-father is the first Cambodian blogger, even though his blog seems being done manually (not technically or dynamically).
Anyways, I started blogging a few months ahead(august 2004) of Tharum, but I’m less popular *lol*

For me, I just knew term “Blog” or “Weblog” at the end of 2005. And then I created it at the beginning of 2006. As i agreed with u, more and more Cambodian bloggers are increasing from day to day. I hope there will be more bloggers to share their opinion, knowledge and working experiences with each others. By the way, IT is a tool for promoting communication in the present .

I am sorry i have no answer to your question because i have no data researched about it yet. But I think there are a lot of new Cambodian bloggers at the present. According to my previous comment, my friend told me that there are more than 300 bloggers. But i think there are more than this figure.
I hope other blogger will know this data.

It’s not sure that King Father is the first Khmer blogger
But it’s sure King Father’s website has really many many important historical and political informations about Cambodia evolution from 1941 till now, especially during his first reign(1941-1970) and his second one(1993-2004) that we (our generation) should learn from and analyze them.
