Having drink at Restaurant on Christmas Day
This evening, I left office and went to have beer with my friends at the Beer Garden in Phnom Penh. While I was trying to ride motorcycle with my friend to approach the restaurant, I met many and many traffic jam on streets, even the small streets. I always tried to detour small streets to avoid the traffic congestion but I did not. How traffic jam in Phnom Penh!!!
On December 25, that is the Christmas Day celebrated over the world. For Cambodia, some companies and NGOs closed one day to celebrate but my workplace did not close. While driving along street in Phnom Penh on that day, I saw many young Cambodians going a walk by carrying box of gifts, flowers, and so on. I do not know whether they understand the Christmas Celebration or not. This event is for the westerns who are Christians.
For me, I and friends of mine went to have some beer at restaurant, it did not mean that we celebrate this event; we just drank some beer together because we rarely gathered to drink. To me, I do not care about the Christmas. I think that it is for Christians who have to do it and make it happy with their friends, family and others.
While I arrived at restaurant, I saw waiters and waitresses wearing Santa hats. It was because that their restaurant owner told them to put on it to celebrate Christmas Day. At that time, I saw many young people were coming into this restaurant as well. They seemly to be happy with Christmas Day.

Fella,
Nowadays, Xmas is being celebrated worldwide whether one is being Christian or not. It’s becoming more like a commercial reason to celebrate for retailers to earn money from the festive mood. So no big deal if Cambodia is also joining the festive crowd like in many countries worldwide and also in S.E.Asia… This is now called ” globalization” era!
What?? I dont think cambodian understand the real meaning of christmast!!
Yes, I agree with u, Borin. Cambodian people just know that Christmas day is Christmas. So, I feel worry for what they did is wrong.
How many people who are Christian?
Christmas is about the celebration of the birth of Jesus.
People would normally go to church, have a mass/pray then everyone would reunite with their family or love one or friend. It’s the time of the year that they would meet and leave behind all their pasts and differences. But these days, sorry to say that Christmas is all about material needs [presents and gifts] and not much of belief any more. Australians spent about 500 million dollars alone on the last day of Christmas shopping [5 billion dollars during the season], retailers are happy with the figure.
Now they are having Mid-year clearance sale, just day after Christmas, I believed another billion will be spent as well.
