Day of 14th of February, called Valentine’s Day, is the day that Cambodian young teenagers are waiting for the day and they always regards this day as their special day for their lovers, especially boyfriends and girlfriends. It is diverted that, this day comes, many street flower stall have been set up and price of roses is going up, not like usual day. I personally do not understand well its meanings and definition of Valentine’s Day and I never take care of it.

I now search for its definition of Valentine’s Day, saying that:

An international holiday of love is occurring annually on February 14th. Traditionally, greeting cards, flowers, candy and other gifts are exchanged between loved ones. From a breakfast perspective, it is the number one day for breakfast in bed.

The origin of Valentine’s Day is uncertain. Many historians believe it started with St. Valentine, a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity. He died on February 14, 269 A.D. As the story goes, St. Valentine left a farewell note for his jailer’s daughter – who had become his friend – and signed it “From Your Valentine”.

I asked my friend who is living abroad about Valentine’s Day young boys and girls consider it as the special day for their love. And then my friend expressed surprised with what I said to her. And she told me that we never heard it. She just said that it is the day for showing loves to FRIENDS, FAMILIES AND LOVERS by giving flowers. And she added that some young teenagers always do something wrong such as having sex and misunderstand its meanings.

According to History of Valentine’s Day, every February across the country, candy, flowers and gifts are exchanged between loved ones.

Valentine in America, and I’m sure in Cambodia is simply another way to commercialize a holiday. In fact, all holidays are commercialize. In other words, it’s all about consumption, and profiting businesses. It’s good for small local businesses (flower shops, candy shops, jewelers, restaurants, food vendors, etc.)

On the other hand, it does help to ruin Khmer traditions. Hey, we have to move forward sometime, whether one likes it or not. It is a global community. With tv, cellphones, and the internet, ideas to spread within seconds, and culture all over the world are changing.

In the time of globalization, all countries over the world always get other cultures from other countries but what we have to think is that we have to accept what is benefiting the country and people. It is good to get new culture. Sometimes new culture destroy our traditional culture. Be careful!!!

At the present, Cambodia get new culture from modern countries such as clothing, technology, culture and so on.

Valentine’s Day is a day to show off love to everyone between children and parents, brother and sister, you and your love…ect It means general not just for you and your and girl friend- it is for everyone to show love and get together as whole family to dine out and presents exchanged…ect It is not a bad holiday or celebration, but the bad thing is our Cambodian people like to take something wrong way without understanding the term and the meaning of it. It is because of the misleading information from mouth to mouth. I, totally, encourage Cambodian people to take this holiday as every country, but just doing the right way like trying to make your mama or papa happy beside going out with your girlF or boyF and having sex…

As you know Cambodian people don’t really know that kind of Piramid Cheme.

i got some interesting ideas about the Valentine’s day :) this is such a very controversial to all nations, not just in Cambodia. for mostly Cambodians are very confused the meaning of The valentine’s day ,by they just stay focusing on love between boyfriend and girlfriend. In fact, it’s was also the day for showing love feeling to ur family, friend, etc. And most teenagers are getting crazy celebrate this day,but didn’t get what is the real meaning of LOve day is(valentine’s day ). and some of Cambodians girl lost their virgin and what they got back is regretting and embarrassment in the society, bcuz Khmer culture they loved to value the women on this things. this is some bad picture of valentine’s day in Cambodia. In mu opinion,Valentine’s day is a very awesome love showing day,i can show how much i love my parents, friends, and relatives And,i do support Cambodia to have this day too,but kinds of try to be under control, cuz valentine will give us more impacts for either positives or negatives. Great.. :) I LOVE VALENTINES’s DAY… <3 express love and making a either relationship or friendship become more stronger and lasting forever !!! XD ;)
