Respecting traffic law to reduce corruption

The main cause of corruption is in the traffic system after the judiciary system in the current Cambodian society. Most of the people always blame for the traffic police to fine them on the road. To these points, do you ask yourself if why police fine you? Did you get used to violate traffic lights or traffic signs? If we talk about corruption, it is thought over the public institutions rather than the private sector. Why is there corruption? Corruption happens when someone uses their position, power and influence to obtain personal benefit for themselves and anyone connected with them.

How can we do in order to reduce corruption in the traffic system? I just want to say about how to reduce the fine and extortion from traffic police. In order to participate in reduction of corruption, we themselves have to participate in respecting the traffic law by not violating traffic lights, traffic signs and respect of each drivers, and so on. And we should stop blaming police for fining us. If we obey the traffic law, we will not be fined by police. Therefore, everything is starting from us, and then corruption in the traffic system will be going down step by step.

The Guide to Traffic Laws and Traffic Fines reveals the way to participate in reducing the corruption in the traffic system in current society in Cambodia. If you have committed a fault whilst driving on the road, you should remember:

  1. A fine issued without a receipt is corruption. Drivers must always remember to ask for a receipt from traffic police officers whenever they are fined.
  2. Drivers should wait to obtain receipt for a fine when they have committed faults and fined by traffic police officers.
  3. Asking for a receipt for fines can contribute to reducing corruption in the implementation of traffic law.

Traffic police officer

Commonly, I noted that when drivers have been fined, they never ask for receipt from police officers because when they ask for receipt, the traffic police officers will ask them to show the driver license, annual road tax payment receipt, vehicle registration card, and so on. If drivers do not have them, they will be fined for faults, so they have to pay more and more. Drivers do not take receipt because they pay less for police officer. And police always say to drivers that it is not fine. This is the money for buying coffee or cigarette. Hmmmmm.

It’s a common thing even here :) More in Cambodia, the official salary is too low, which leads that kinda activity occasionally takes place.

Due to low salary, so we suggest all of us stop from blaming for traffic police when they fine us. If we do not want the police to fine we all have to respect traffic law, traffic lights and so on. So that, no excuse for police to fine drivers.

Most of people who blamed traffic police officers to fine then are the traffic law violators. Reducing traffic jam, road accident, it is the starting from ourselves.

Look, 1st of all, we are creating that by not abiding to traffic rules and regulations. If all of us play by the rules then it will be no traffic jam, accident or death. They are out there to do their job and some are taking the opportunity to make money, no one can deny that, but if morotist is not at fault why should they pay for fine.

Traffic polices seem wants to earn money to their pocket.
