Booming building construction to leave consequences for people
Taking a glance around Phnom Penh, we really make conclusion that our country is developing fast if comparing with the last decade. Most of development is the real estate. The unused plot of land in middle of capital and outskirt has been fulfilled in on which high-newly buildings are being constructed and resting. These reflect that it is because of the economic growth, social stabilization, and peace.
If we site one place and consider deeply over the development, we will find out some consequences for Cambodian people possibly occurring in the near future. What I am concerned is that consequences will affect Cambodian people:
- The traffic congestion will be worse and worse than the present time. The numbers of population will double in Phnom Penh and the numbers of cars, motorcycles, and other vehicles will be dramatically increasing as well because of the increase of consumers.
- Sewage drainage systems will be jammed, and most of streets will be flooded during the rainy season. I personally observe that city’s drainage systems are not widened. Most and most sewage wastes will be increasing due to the number of residents.
- Air pollution will be worse and worse than the present. It is because of the smoke of old cars and vehicles flying over the City. Even though, the government will ban from importing vehicles made below the year of 2000.
- Blackout will happen more and more frequently than the present, if the power supply does not have increased and supplies enough. In the future, the demand for electricity will be going up because the increase of the consumers and devices will be up.
All of these points I found out and it is my thinking. How do you think about the increasing building construction in Cambodia in the last few years? What will happen to people? How about your point of views?

You have your point there Vutha, population is kept growing and it good to see our economic growing a long so everyone have fair go to make the living and enjoy life style, city life style ….etc….however the things that you are worried can be further develop and eleminated the troublesome, infrastucture that is what we needed. it’s better to develope rather then undevelope by just to seat back and live in the poor condition. it’s just my 2 cents thought!

Well, Kane is right!!i do agree with him. Pollution must come along with development. It’s unavoidable. However those pollution could be decreased and made better.
So that we should accept those plans rather than leaving our country desert!!

In developing the city many problem have to take into consideration. For instance, if we only build more and more, we need to make your the energy supply can cope up with the demand, also, if more people we need to consider the capacity of streets and infrastructure, the city will jam.
Today we’ve seen many project goes without proper planning. For example we’ve seen garden and park being redesign again and again. We’ve new asphalt road being dug just to put another pipe.
The proper planning need to forecast the future demand for other expansion. We cannot let one guy build the road, and then let the other guy dig the road. These 2 guys must work together to exchange information.
The effectiveness will improve much, those responsible, are more responsible in their job.

I really want to see our country to be developed and Cambodians live in good condition, have high living standard and good lifestyle. But what I raised is the consequences that will happen if the government has not proper master plan to develop city. For example, high buildings were constructed but the sewage drainage systems did not do it yet.
If the government do not have good policy to develop the country properly. All consequences will happen and make people live in the poor condition. Thanks for all of you to share opinion.
