Phnom Penh traffic police’s brutal acts
Where is the justice in Cambodia society? Who respects the law? Who breaks the law? Most of traffic policemen have been stationed at the corner of the traffic lights in Phnom Penh to facilitate the road traffic and protect social order for Cambodian people. On the contrary, image of policemen order protection is under criticism from people because of their impolite language and indecent acts by getting money from trucks, taxi drivers or transportation pick-up.
Recently, 42-year-old man was beaten unconscious by traffic police officer with a piece of bamboo while the motorist refused to stop his motorcycle, which haven’t license plate. It was great that his wife and elderly woman was no injury when they rode bike with him.
Observing that some of policemen always used impolite words or bad acts on motorists or truck drivers when they were stopped by police, senior officials have to take immediate action against bad officers who are threatening the passengers.
It is not enough for senior traffic police to say sorry to the victim and pay compensation. What is important is that this police have to be punished by law in order to make a good example for other police. And such acts are like the crime.
If people do not respect the rule of traffic law, police have to fine them, not committing such bad acts or using rude words, and police have not to threaten people to pay money without giving receipt.
Other act who police did is that when someone disrespect the traffic light or something. Police’s act is like the thief, why I said that it is because police always pulled out motorist’s key from their motorbike in the middle of streets and then force them to walk motorbike to the sidewalk.
On the contrary, traffic policemen are seemly afraid of stopping the traffic offenders who drive luxury cars bearing state, police or military license plates. Police officers turn a blind eye to drivers, when they break road traffic rule.

This act is contrary to the nature of law that Policeman shall indeed respectfully implement and conduct. Say sorry or compensate after getting someone injured is not enough.
hi i am vanna i saw your article in this website and it is totally righteous on what had happened in Cambodia’s society. and i do approve this article so much because of what do not you know i used to be a victim of the brutal police too. when they stopped me, they pulled out my key and push me to other side of the road. i do not know what the hell is going on to that polices? oh holy cow. and i hope that people will start respect the traffic law and the authorities too. to have the society order, you gotta obey the law
i do agree too because i used to be a victim of the inhuman police. once i did not know what i did sth wrong with me and my brother, then freaky police came from the other side and tried to stop my car and fine 5$ without any reason. and the accused of breaking is forgetting to wear a safe belt. and what do you think how many Cambodia drivers wear the safe belt wherever they go. no !

It is a thoughtful article. I do agree with you. It is so terrible to see that the authority like some policemen who are supposed to maintain the law and order, yet act in such ways. Personally, I observe that most people in Cambodia don’t give much values to the authorities like policemen, PMs or even some government officers. Why? The reason is because they haven’t played their roles and the problem of corruption.
