Police started to fine motorists in evening
So far, the increasing number of passengers has good understanding about the advantages of wearing helmet and installing mirror after the road traffic law has been enforced early this year to all people traveling on road throughout Cambodia. It is noted that a handful of young youths still do not comply with the rule. You will be faced with a fine of 4,000 riel or 5,000 without mirror and crash helmet respectively.
Generally, after 5:30 pm or early morning, we never saw traffic police fining motorcycle drivers without mirror and helmet but recently, I spotted policemen get started to fine motorists at around 7:00pm at Olympic stadium traffic light. And that time, I did not wear helmet, so I had to avoid a fine by police.
Therefore, you should be careful when drive in the evening without putting on crash helmet. Right now, traffic policemen take opportunities to enforce the road traffic law at night.
As you know, traffic policemen are under a strong fire from the public because of extortion, bribery and corruption. When you travel along street in Phnom Penh, you will see police taking money from taxis, transportation trucks and others to put them into their pockets or to give a part of income to superiors.
Sometimes, policemen always have committed indecent acts to innocent people, such as not issuing receipt, beating passengers with electric baton or sometimes causing motorcycles to fall down and drivers sustained wound as well.
You should wear helmet when you drive at the evening after 5:30 pm, if not, you will be faced fine by police.
